Construction is officially underway on a new residential development in Newtown, where 29 open market homes are set to be built by Welshpool-based developer SJ Roberts Homes.

The development, named Penson Gardens, is located just off Llanidloes Road and marks the company’s first foray into housing projects in Wales. Early site work has begun, with the first homes expected to be available for reservation in spring 2025.

The project will feature a mix of semi-detached and detached homes ranging from one to four bedrooms, all available for private sale.

“This is an exciting opportunity for SJ Roberts Homes to provide a range of homes at this fantastic location on the edge of Newtown,” said Mike Sambrook, Director at SJ Roberts Homes.

Founded in 2016, SJ Roberts Homes is part of the larger SJ Roberts Group and has previously delivered several successful developments across Shropshire. One of its flagship projects, Allscott Meads—built on a former sugar beet factory site near Telford—has earned multiple awards.

While the company has worked extensively in Wales through its construction services, Penson Gardens represents its first independent residential development in the country.

The homes will be constructed using timber frames supplied by Lowfield Timber Frames, a sister company within the group, with design and planning managed by SJ Roberts Homes’ in-house team.

“We cannot wait to get started and to show potential purchasers everything that this new development will offer,” Sambrook added.

The development is anticipated to help meet growing demand for housing in the area, offering a variety of options for individuals and families looking to settle in Newtown.
