New AI Search Toolkit Set to Transform Digital Visibility for Rural Welsh Businesses

A pioneering digital toolkit is set to become a major boost for small businesses across rural Wales as AI-powered search tools redefine how customers find local services online.

Created in Ceredigion by Antur Cymru Enterprise, the SMART Busnes programme is helping Welsh SMEs get ahead of the curve in Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) — the fast-emerging approach that determines which businesses appear directly within AI-generated search responses.

As artificial intelligence increasingly replaces traditional search results with instant, conversational answers, SMART Busnes — backed by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund — has unveiled one of the first hands-on AEO toolkits available in Wales.

Led by Digital Business Advisor Lynne Rees, the programme’s new insight framework, known as Agentic AEO, is designed to give rural and micro-businesses the knowledge, structure and confidence needed to remain visible in a digital landscape now dominated by AI-written answers rather than lists of links.

Kevin Harrington, Project Manager for SMART Busnes, said: “AI search is here to stay, and our Agentic AEO insight series isn’t a tweak – it’s a reset.

“It’s about helping Welsh SMEs show up wherever customers search: on Google, on social media, even within AI answers. This work gives our rural businesses the same digital advantage that large brands pay thousands for.”

Traditional SEO techniques are already being overtaken by AI-driven platforms such as Google’s Search Generative Experience and tools like ChatGPT, which deliver direct responses instead of directing users to multiple websites.

For small businesses, this shift presents a serious risk. Without content structured for AI interpretation, many firms could fall below the threshold of visibility entirely, never appearing in front of potential customers.

Agentic AEO addresses this challenge by focusing on clarity, structure and user intent across websites, social media channels and Google Business Profiles. When information is presented in formats that AI systems can easily process, businesses significantly increase their chances of being featured within automated answers.

The SMART Busnes AEO Insight Series offers a practical entry point, featuring step-by-step guidance on restructuring web pages, real-world examples of effective layouts and exclusive AI prompts to help busy owners create optimised content quickly and affordably. Even modest interventions — such as a website review, short advisory session or targeted content update — can shape how a business is surfaced throughout the year.

Antur Cymru CEO Bronwen Raine added: “SMART Busnes was built to help small businesses adapt to change, not chase it.

“The Agentic AEO insight series shows how Shared Prosperity Fund investment is driving genuine innovation, building confidence, skills and sustainability across local economies.”

At a time when many Welsh SEO providers remain focused on outdated methods, SMART Busnes is positioning Ceredigion as a leader in AEO adoption. By translating emerging theory into accessible, practical support, the programme is strengthening digital resilience across Mid and West Wales and helping small enterprises stay visible, trusted and competitive in an AI-driven future.
